Anaconda,
Deer Lodge County, Montana 59711 West of the
continental divide and located just six
miles from Interstate 90 and 15 miles from
the area where Interstate 15 (north-south)
intersects Interstate 90 (east-west). in the
Clark Fork River Valley is Anaconda, Montana
ninth largest city in Montana. Anaconda is
where much of the copper ore from "the
Richest Hill on Earth" was refined. A tall
smoke stack from one of the smelters still
dominates the landscape as you approach

The US
Census of 2000 reports there over 9,400
residents. Anaconda covers an area of three
square miles and is 5,335 feet above sea
level. The surrounding country is mostly
densely timbered forest lands, lakes and
mountains. The county has common borders
with Beaverhead, Butte-Silver Bow, Granite,
Jefferson and Powell counties.
Now tourism
and health care are becoming primary
employers for Butte workers. A recent
incursion of investors and a Jack Nicklas 18
hole golf course inside the city limits has
revitalized the economy of the area. The
golf course in the summer and just 23 miles
west on the historic Pintlar Scenic Route is
Discovery Ski Area.
A after
the era of intensive smelting in the area
has resulted in EPA designating parts of the
area a Super Fund Site – The golf course
cover one such site. Heavy metals such as
lead and arsenic are found in some spots.

have contributed to the local economy |
